XC Seminar and Colorado Soaring Awards

It is on Saturday, March 7th.   It is to be an all-day seminar at the beautiful NCAR facility on Table Mesa in Boulder.  It will begin at 9:00 AM sharp.  If you can’t be on time, be early.

It will be “brown bag”, so bring a lunch and refreshments (non-alcoholic, please).  If you don’t pack one, there is a King Soopers at the bottom of the hill in the Table Mesa Shopping Center with a deli, which you will pass.  The directions are simple.  Take the Table Mesa exit off Highway 36 (the Boulder Turnpike) or off Broadway (Highway 93) to Table Mesa and go west on that road, up the hill, until you have to park at the facility.  The road literally ends in the parking lot.

The seminar has now been approved by FAAST (FAA Safety Team) thanks to Elliot Crawford, the FAAST team member from the SSB.  This allows you to receive WINGS credit for attendance.  If you are signed up with the FAA you probably have already received an email from FAAST about this. Here are links if you are interested:  http://www.faasafety.gov/     http://www.faasafety.gov/SPANS/event_details.aspx?eid=23835.  You must first sign up on the main website and then register for the seminar to receive credit.  Note that registering with the FAA does not satisfy the need to email me with your intentions.  Please email me if you haven’t.

If you aren’t planning on attending, I apologize for the fact that you are receiving these emails, but I have no good way to separate out mailing lists.  If you didn’t get the earlier emails, let me know and I can forward you more details.

Currently we have a large response, with attendees from CSA, BFSS, High Flights, SSB, Air Force Academy, and independent pilots from as far away as Chicago and Alabama.  We have about 70 pilots+/- that sound committed.

Welcome assistance has been received from Beth Holland and Charlie Martin for our meeting site; Andreas Edrich, video; Dan Bourgeois, IT assistance; Sam Streger for website posting and DVD; and Frank Whiteley for webinar or webcast.  Thanks to all and especially the pilots who have agreed to present.

Here is the schedule:

9:00 Welcome and introduction. BE ON TIME!!
9:05 Al Ossorio: Task selection, planning, maps, equipment
9:45 Colin Barry: Badges, records, beginning competition
10:30 Break
10:45 Dave Leonard: Weather and his RASP site
11:30 Gary Baughman: Safety, off-field landings, communication
12:15 Brown bag lunch and “networking” with friends and fellow pilots
12:45 Frank Whiteley: Colorado Soaring Awards, Records and SSA news
1:30 John Seaborn: In-flight tactics
2:30 Break
2:45 Tom Serkowski: Post-flight analysis
3:30 to close: Panel discussion.  Have your questions ready.

After closing, pilots are encouraged to get together for an informal dinner in Boulder to get pumped for spring.

Questions are welcome after each presentation, but keep them short.  Write down ideas for more detailed questions and discussion to be used during the panel discussion at the end.

Webinar information for those pilots who cannot attend in person is in Frank Whiteley’s post on rec.avaition.soaring http://groups.google.com/group/rec.aviation.soaring/topics?gvc=2 .

Please feel free to offer input or suggestions.  As usual, if you know someone who is interested and may not have received this email, please forward it.

Fly safely,
Bob
